Starting on Friday, May 18th, Hart House Chess Club will be running a series of workshops for beginner chess players, introducing them to the rudiments of chess tactics. These lessons will be taught by Varsity chess player, Panayoti Tsialas, and everybody is welcome to attend! The seminar is recommended for chess enthusiasts who have just learnt the movements of the pieces and wish to step-up their game.
The workshops will discuss two fundamental chess concepts: Attack and Defense. The tentative Syllabus for this 4-step Seminar is posted below:
#1 May 18th: Attack – Targets of an attack – X-ray attack – Discovered attack
#2 May 25th: Defense – The four ways of defending
#3 June 8th: The double attack
#4 June 15th. Defending against a double attack
Teaching material and ideas will be taken from Learning Chess (Step 2), by Rob Brunia and For van Wijgerden, and Chess Camp (Volumes 1-4), by Igor Sukhin. No reading is expected before class but attendees will be assigned optional homework to practice at home.
